Trump administration to cut federal funding for California's high-speed rail project after the state invested billions without visible outcomes

Federal Funding for California High-Speed Rail at Risk

The Trump administration seems poised to withdraw the remaining $4 billion in federal funds allocated for California’s high-speed rail project. This decision appears to stem from accumulating issues such as missed deadlines, budget overruns, and unreliable ridership forecasts.

On Wednesday, the Department of Transportation released a comprehensive compliance review that spanned 315 pages, revealing numerous missed deadlines and highlighting the substantial taxpayer dollars already spent without tangible progress.

Officials from the federal government have expressed concerns that the project lacks a “viable path” to completion, raising alarms about its future.

“The California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA) relied on false hope for endless federal funding,” remarked Drew Feeley, the acting administrator for the Federal Railroad Administration. “In truth, CHSRA has effectively misled taxpayers regarding their $4 billion investment, and there’s no solid plan to deliver any segment on time.”

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that the findings “expose a cold, hard truth: CHSRA cannot complete this project on schedule or within budget.”

The initiative to create a high-speed rail line from Sacramento to San Diego was first approved in a 2008 ballot measure, aiming for completion by 2020 with a projected budget of $33 billion. However, costs have ballooned to an estimated total of over $100 billion, with the project now confined to a mere 171-mile stretch between Merced and Bakersfield.

In a subsequent post on X, Duffy elaborated on the administration’s stance on the federal funding.

“California’s high-speed rail shows all signs of being a boondoggle:

  • $16 billion already spent
  • 17 years of time lost
  • No high-speed track laid yet

We are putting California on alert: If you fail to deliver, American taxpayers will not support your train to nowhere. If they don’t meet their obligations, it may be time for these funds to be redirected to other projects that align with @POTUS’s vision of building exceptional infrastructure.”
