White House Communications Director Faces Tough Questions
Stephen Chan, the Communications Director at the White House, found himself in a heated exchange with a reporter from HuffPost. The reporter pressed on why many of President Trump’s statements aren’t published on the White House website.
“If you think we’re not transparent, you must be really out of touch,” Chan shouted at HuffPost reporter SV Date. “The president holds several press sessions every day, streamed live on various platforms.”
Chan even took a jab at Date’s media outlet, suggesting that their views are skewed. “We offer ample access to events; if you think otherwise, it seems you might be affected by some sort of ‘Trump Mad Syndrome.’ Just stop whining about it,” he added.
The backlash came after the White House argued that it often keeps Trump’s comments under wraps. They pointed out that, during Trump’s first 100 days in office, he made 146 appearances, yet only released transcripts for about 20% of those.
“Trump’s aides haven’t clarified why they decided to withhold the majority of transcripts,” a report stated. “However, Chan didn’t hesitate to confront HuffPost for their line of questioning.”
The article noted that while many videos of Trump’s public addresses are accessible online, finding specific statements can be quite a challenge—a fact that likely fueled Chan’s fierce reaction.
The White House spokesperson isn’t shy about confronting media figures either. Back in April, he criticized Joanna Coles from the Daily Beast for her comments.
In another context, Coles commented on the president’s appearance at Pope Francis’ funeral, expressing concerns over Trump’s recent weight loss. She mentioned, “There are plenty of questions because he lost so much weight. I mean, his health advisor, Robert Kennedy Jr., doesn’t endorse people using Ozempic as he believes it shows a lack of willpower.”
Chan retorted with a personal attack against Coles. He called out CNN for featuring her and accused her of spreading baseless claims about Trump’s health, suggesting she was suffering from what he termed ‘Trump Disruption Syndrome’ that affected her judgment.
