Trump’s Push for Republican Voter Turnout in Key States
In Washington, President Trump is dedicating efforts and resources to rally Republican voters for the upcoming elections in New Jersey and Virginia. Interestingly, he hasn’t shown clear support for the Republican candidates in Virginia, particularly in the gubernatorial race.
A Republican source mentioned that “Trump doesn’t support losers,” as candidates Winsome Earl Sears and John Reed trail significantly behind their Democratic rivals in polling.
Despite this, Trump and his team remain hopeful. They believe there may still be a positive turnout, especially if Jack Ciatarelli manages to surprise everyone in New Jersey, where he trails Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill by a small margin.
On Monday night, Trump plans to host a televised rally for Republican lawmakers from both states. Yet, it remains uncertain whether he will endorse Earl Sears or Reid, or simply encourage Republicans to back his policies.
A source indicated that the White House has largely dismissed the Virginia gubernatorial race due to Sears’ lackluster campaign, noting, “There’s a perception that Earl Sears was particularly bad.”
What seems to be the main focus right now is the voter turnout in New Jersey.
Meanwhile, over the weekend, President Trump greenlit approximately $1 million in funding from the Republican National Committee to boost voter engagement in both states.
In Virginia, supporters have been primarily focused on Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares as he competes against Democrat Jay Jones, who has recently been embroiled in scandals. Trump is backing Miyares in this race.
Polls suggest that Miyares is in a tight race with Jones, which could set the stage for Republicans to block Democratic attempts to gerrymander congressional districts.
Looking ahead, the midterm elections will be crucial, potentially dictating whether Trump’s final two years in office face legislative gridlock from Democratic-led inquiries and initiatives.
If Miyares wins, there would be one less Democratic attorney general willing to challenge Trump’s policies.
On the Democratic side, Representative Abigail Spanberger is in a strong position in her bid for governor, and if successful, she stands to become Virginia’s first female governor. Her running mate, Ghazala Hashmi, would also break new ground as one of the few Muslims in statewide office.
For Republicans, Earl Sears has the chance to be the first black female governor in the U.S., while Reed could become a prominent openly gay figure in politics. However, Sears has not resonated well with voters, and Reed has faced controversy due to past posts.
As one close observer noted, “The only state I think is important is New Jersey.”
A Republican upset in New Jersey could revitalize the party’s spirits, with the source stating, “New Jersey would put some wind in our sails and silence some of the doomsayers.”
Ciatarelli previously garnered 48% of the vote against Phil Murphy, only losing by a narrow margin in 2021. Meanwhile, Sherrill has faced scrutiny regarding her past involvement in a cheating scandal at the Naval Academy.
Although Trump lost both states last November, he has remained relatively quiet, focusing more on the New York mayoral race, where he’s been consistently critical of Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani.
Ultimately, Trump remarked that Mamdani’s victory might not be such a bad thing for the Republican Party’s image.
