John Deere and Agricultural Equipment Costs

Josh Jepsen, CFO and Senior Vice President of John Deere & Company, spoke about the future of agriculture at a recent Investor Day event, focusing on innovations like autonomous tractors and See & Spray technology.

President Trump addressed issues impacting the U.S. agricultural sector, mentioning plans to cut costs related to farming equipment by lightening regulatory burdens on manufacturers. He noted that his administration aims to set aside around $12 billion in support for farmers affected by trade issues stemming from tariffs.

“There’s something else I’d like to mention that I believe is crucial. We’re looking to reduce many of the environmental limitations imposed on farm machinery,” he stated. This comes from his conviction that these regulations make equipment unnecessarily complicated and expensive. He shared his perspective, saying, “I can relate, as I often purchase this equipment for various land needs—large clubs owning hundreds of acres, and yes, purchasing a lot of different machinery,” implying a frustration with current market conditions.

In further remarks, Trump emphasized that rising equipment costs are largely due to environmental regulations that, he argues, complicate the technology without providing real benefits. He said, “Many produce equipment that doesn’t help the environment, driving prices higher and making them less practical.” He insists that his administration will simplify these restrictions to help bring equipment costs down.

The President indicated that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would collaborate with the Department of Agriculture (USDA) to alleviate these regulatory pressures on machinery manufacturers.

In a response to Trump’s statements, John Deere expressed its commitment to serving farmers, aligning with the administration’s focus on cost reduction. The company affirmed its dedication to aiding American farmers in minimizing their costs while enhancing productivity.

John Deere elaborated on the value of agricultural technology, claiming that it provides farmers with innovative tools that can significantly reduce costs and improve efficiency. They emphasized their readiness to collaborate with the Trump administration and Congress to support local economies during challenging economic cycles.
