Steve Bannon, a powerful voice for the “Make America Great Again” movement and one of former President Donald Trump’s staunchest supporters, is scheduled to be handed over to federal prison on Monday.
Nearly two years ago, a federal jury found that Bannon Guilty He was charged with two counts of contempt of Congress after refusing to testify or produce documents despite being subpoenaed by a House Select Committee on January 6. Bannon served as chief strategist for President Trump’s first months before abruptly leaving the White House in 2017. A rift between friends With the President.
Bannon has also been on the political offensive, remaining staunchly optimistic about the next election, predicting a “landslide victory” for Trump.
Bannon and Trump later reconciled, and Bannon, now 70, has continued to promote Trump and the MAGA movement on his Rumble show, “War Room,” and is appealing his conviction.
In an interview Jonathan Karl of ABC News Over the weekend, Bannon called the J6 committee “illegitimate” and claimed he was simply following “the advice of his lawyers” in ignoring the subpoena.
“I followed the advice of my lawyers,” Bannon explained, “as anyone in the country would if they had competent legal counsel.”
Recently, members of Congress Challenged the legitimacy of the J6 Committee Last week, several prominent House Republicans, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Louisiana) and Rep. Steve Scalise (R-Louisiana), filed an amicus brief in support of Bannon’s appeal, hoping to spare him a prison sentence.
Johnson called the J6 committee “improperly constituted” and argued that the subpoena issued to Bannon was invalid. Scalise also placed the blame squarely on former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) for any damage the committee has apparently caused. “House Republican leadership continues to believe that Speaker Pelosi abused her power in forming this select committee,” Scalise said in a joint statement with House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-Minn.).
But just days after the amicus brief was filed, the Supreme Court rejected Bannon’s request to stay behind bars while his appeals process continues, meaning he must report to a low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut, on Monday, where he will spend the next four months.
He is due to be released just days before Election Day on November 5th.
Despite the looming prison sentence, Bannon courageDuring Friday’s “War Room,” Trump called on his supporters to pray for those who persecute him and not waste their time writing letters of encouragement. “Don’t write me letters. They won’t be read. I’m not going to read your letters for a second. I’m not going to read them. Do you know why? I don’t want you to take your time writing letters. I want you to get on with your work,” Trump said.
“This is all about winning. There’s no substitute for winning here. There’s no substitute for winning. You know that. I know that.”
While urging MAGA supporters to stay focused on the election, Bannon remains staunchly optimistic about the outcome. In fact, he predicts a “landslide victory” for Trump: “It’ll be 340 or 350 votes.” [electoral] “Vote,” he told Carl.
Bannon has also gone on a political offensive, calling himself a “political prisoner of Nancy Pelosi and Merrick Garland,” and warning several former top federal officials that investigators will be coming after them soon if Trump wins in November.
