Trump ally Steve Bannon to report to federal prison to serve four-month sentence on contempt charges

Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of President Trump, is due to report to a federal prison in Connecticut on Monday to begin serving a four-month sentence after being charged with contempt for failing to comply with a subpoena in a congressional investigation into the storming of the U.S. Capitol.

The judge ordered Bannon, who had been free for nearly two years while he appealed, to report to prison on Monday after a review panel of the appeals court upheld his contempt of Congress conviction.

The Supreme Court rejected his last-minute appeal to postpone the sentence.

The jury found Bannon guilty of two counts of contempt of Congress: the first for refusing to give a deposition before a House committee on Jan. 6 and the second for refusing to provide documents related to the Republican former president’s involvement in efforts to try to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden.

The defense argues that the case raises issues that should be heard by the Supreme Court, including the belief by Mr. Bannon’s former lawyers that the subpoena was invalid because former President Donald Trump asserted executive privilege.

But prosecutors argue that Bannon left the White House years ago and that Trump never invoked executive privilege before the committee.

While Bannon’s appeal is likely to continue, Republican members of Congress have supported the January 6 intervention, arguing that the committee was improperly established, effectively seeking to find that the subpoena Bannon received was unjustified.

Another of Trump’s closest aides, trade adviser Peter Navarro, was also found guilty of contempt of Congress.

He reported to prison in March to serve his four-month sentence after the Supreme Court rejected his motion to postpone his sentence.

Bannon also faces criminal charges in New York state court for allegedly defrauding donors who provided funds for the construction of a wall on the U.S.-Mexico border.

Bannon has pleaded not guilty to charges including money laundering, conspiracy and fraud, and his trial has been postponed until at least the end of September.
