Trump and Graham’s incredible path from fierce opponents to close allies

Sen. Lindsey Graham describes sanctuary cities as a significant deception against Americans.

Senator Lindsey Graham Passes Away at Age 71

Senator Lindsey Graham from South Carolina, who had reservations about Donald Trump’s nomination in the 2016 presidential race, has died at the age of 71. Graham had famously warned, “Nominating Trump will destroy us… and rightly so.” His skepticism, however, didn’t prevent him from aligning with Trump later.

Initially, he described Trump’s candidacy as absurd, even likening it to “being shot in the head.” Yet, over time, their relationship transformed. Graham, once a critic, became one of Trump’s prominent supporters in the Senate, serving as a vital link between Capitol Hill and the White House, despite his earlier doubts about Trump’s presidency.

In the wake of Graham’s passing, Trump expressed his sorrow, revealing that he had spoken to Graham shortly before his death. “This could be our last call,” he recalled. When informed of Graham’s death early in the morning, Trump admitted he was in disbelief, describing Graham as “like a family member” and acknowledging the profound loss.

Interestingly, before their friendship grew, Trump had labeled Graham “a disgrace” and one of “the stupidest people I’ve ever seen.” Those words contrasted sharply with his later sentiments, where he recognized Graham as a key ally who contributed significantly during Trump’s presidency.

Following Graham’s funeral, discussions have already begun regarding who might take his place in the Senate. Graham had often expressed gratitude towards Trump, highlighting a complicated yet evolving friendship that began with contention and morphed into a strong alliance.

The dynamics of their relationship included some dramatic moments. At one point, Trump even leaked Graham’s phone number, which led to some, um, creative responses from Graham. And after the events of January 6, 2021, there was a notable rift, wherein Graham distanced himself from Trump. He reflected on the challenging journey they had embarked upon together, emphasizing the achievements of Trump’s presidency while also expressing his desire to step away from controversies.

Graham was heavily involved in supporting Trump’s legislative agendas during his second term, championing significant bills like the Save America Act. As we look back on Graham’s life, it’s evident that his politics and personality were layered, and his impact on the Republican Party will be remembered, even as conversations on succession begin.
