Abby Wambach Reflects on Complex Relationship with America
In a recent podcast interview, Abby Wambach, a celebrated figure in American women’s soccer, shared her nuanced views about the United States and its political climate. Speaking with author Glennon Doyle, Wambach acknowledged that President Donald Trump and his administration excel in at least one area: galvanizing community support.
Wambach expressed her feelings of patriotism but noted the complexities of her relationship with the country, especially in light of current political affairs. She mentioned how the Trump administration cleverly cultivates a sense of community that can distract citizens from underlying issues. “I think from a team perspective, because I have a lot of experience in the team community,” she explained. “I am the person representing this country, and I consider myself very patriotic in many ways, but my relationship with the country is very complicated because of everything that is happening.”
She elaborated that, in trying to build a “team culture,” the approach taken by Trump and his team was, in some ways, quite strategic. Wambach then reflected on the duality among Trump supporters, suggesting there are those who might have second thoughts about their vote, and perhaps even feel embarrassed about their choices. “I think you’re watching some people go, ‘Wait a second; I didn’t sign up for all of this,’” she remarked. Yet, she also acknowledged that some still wholeheartedly support his agenda.
Despite Trump’s declaration earlier this month that his approval ratings are at an all-time high, a recent survey indicates that his approval remains in the 40s, with disapproval hovering around 50%. It’s a mix that keeps conversations around his administration quite lively, though perhaps riddled with some contradictions.
