On Saturday, leaders across the nation condemned an attack targeting Minnesota Democrats amid rising political tensions. The assault resulted in the deaths of Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband, while State Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his spouse were also severely wounded in what has been labeled “politically motivated” violence.
President Trump expressed his outrage on social media, stating, “This kind of horrifying violence would not be tolerated in the United States.” He also added a message of support for the citizens of Minnesota, remarking on their strength.
Attorney General Pam Bondy has committed to thoroughly investigating the incident and ensuring that those responsible are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. Meanwhile, GOP leader John Thune reflected similar sentiments online, saying, “It’s scary to see the events unfolding in Minnesota. Kimberly and I are praying for the loved ones of the assassinated state legislator, her husband, and for his wife, who endured this attack.”
Former Vice President Harris noted the tragic loss of Hortman and her husband, asserting that, “Political violence has no place in our country.” She emphasized the importance of ensuring that elected officials can perform their duties safely.
House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) echoed these sentiments, stating that such political violence is unacceptable and that all leaders need to categorically condemn it.
Minnesota Governor Tim Waltz shared an emotional reaction during a Saturday briefing, mourning the loss of his “beloved” friend, Rep. Melissa Hortman. He advised caution, recommending that people refrain from attending political rallies in Minnesota until the perpetrator is apprehended.
Senator Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) also encouraged protesters to remain at home, expressing her grief over the loss of her friend who dedicated her life to public service. “Melissa was a true civil servant, and I am deeply saddened today,” she said.
Officials have indicated that Hortman and her husband were shot after mistakenly opening their door to someone posing as a police officer, with similar circumstances surrounding the attack on Sen. Hoffman and his wife. Senator Tina Smith (D-Minn.) stated, “We cannot tolerate our political disputes escalating into violence that threatens our democracy.”
Representative Kelly Morrison (D-Minn.) remarked on the devastating impact of the events, while Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) expressed being “deeply disturbed,” and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) referred to it as an assault on democracy.
Former President Biden urged national unity against political violence, stating that a safe environment must be maintained for all public officials. DNC Chairman Ken Martin called for an end to such senseless violence, highlighting the urgent need for political leaders to work without fear for their lives.
