Trump and McMahon Host “Back to School” Event

Education Secretary Linda McMahon, together with President Donald Trump, held a “Back to School” event at the White House. This gathering, which took place on August 24, 2026, aimed to emphasize the administration’s education policies, including the Working Families Tax Cuts Act and McMahon’s initiatives to decentralize education responsibilities and return them to the states.

In her speech, McMahon stressed Trump’s dedication to empowering parents in their children’s education and emphasized the administration’s commitment to protecting parental rights. She stated, “At his direction, we are working hand in hand with the Department of Justice to ensure no school district ever has more power over a child than their own parents.”

Trump echoed these sentiments, asserting the importance of reinstating parental control in educational settings. He also mentioned actions taken by his administration regarding critical topics like race theories and gender policies in schools, including protections for women’s sports through executive orders.

As the discussion unfolded, McMahon highlighted concerns regarding how previous administrations had allowed schools to make significant decisions about students without parental consent. She affirmed the Trump administration’s focus on restoring those rights, partnering with the Justice Department to ensure transparency and parental involvement.

Trump reiterated his advocacy for extending school choice options and education tax credits, urging families to explore alternatives to underperforming public schools. His administration continues to champion policies designed to let public funds follow students to educational environments based on parental preferences, although critics argue that such moves could undermine public school funding in favor of private institutions.

Supporters of the initiative argue that these tax laws actually broaden parental choices. Education policy analyst Colleen Hroncich pointed out that an increasing number of families are dissatisfied with conventional public educational options and are seeking alternatives like charter schools, private schooling, and homeschooling.

At the event’s conclusion, Trump invited dozens of schoolchildren from the audience to join him as he led them to witness the ongoing construction of a new helipad and a ballroom/military complex on the White House grounds.

The U.S. Supreme Court has temporarily allowed the ballroom construction to proceed, though a definitive legal ruling is still pending.

Trump expressed enthusiasm about the construction projects, saying, “You’ll see right alongside of it the great structure that’s rising right next to the White House… If you’d like to follow me, especially with the kids — the kids could see construction. I love the sound of construction.”
