Trump and Xi Jinping Begin State Visit to the U.S.
On Wednesday, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump greeted Chinese President Xi Jinping and Madame Peng Liyuan with a warm welcome as they kicked off a three-day state visit. The visit aims to address the dynamics between the world’s two largest economies.
In a notable display of protocol-breaking courtesy, President Trump personally welcomed the Chinese delegation at Joint Base Andrews, an uncommon move for a sitting president that underscores his commitment to diplomatic relations.
This visit marks Xi’s first official trip to Washington, D.C., in eleven years, following reciprocal visits after Trump’s earlier trip to Beijing in May.
Formal ceremonies at the White House are scheduled for Thursday morning on the South Lawn, where around 500 U.S. Armed Forces members will stand alongside military honor guards and various ceremonial groups.
The ceremonies will commence with a traditional presidential salute and the national anthems. A dramatic flyover featuring a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber joined by four F-22 Raptors will conclude the opening events.
This Week’s Agenda
The leaders are set to make remarks emphasizing the importance of open dialogue and economic stability, leading into discussions on topics like trade, artificial intelligence safeguards, export controls, and security in the region.
In a parallel event, the two First Ladies will engage in a soft-power initiative. After the morning’s official ceremony, Melania and Madame Peng are expected to visit the Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art to explore historical exhibitions and promote cultural exchanges.
Moreover, Thursday evening will feature a black-tie State Dinner hosted by President Trump and the First Lady, attended by key business leaders and dignitaries. The itinerary will wrap up on Friday morning with tea in the Red Room, followed by a visit to the National Archives to view important U.S. documents.
