During his landmark visit to Beijing, President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping celebrated their nations’ relationship on Thursday night.
The toast took place at a dinner following a day filled with a vibrant welcome ceremony and over two hours of discussions that kicked off in the morning and wrapped up in the early afternoon local time.
President Trump remarked on the “deep mutual respect” shared by the people of the two nations since the inception of U.S.-China relations.
“In the early days, Benjamin Franklin published Confucius’ teachings in colonial newspapers, and today, a tribute to this ancient sage is displayed prominently on the United States Supreme Court,” Trump noted.
He expressed gratitude from both sides, referencing how the Chinese people honored President George Washington with a stone tablet for the Washington Monument, which featured words from a Chinese official calling him a “hero among mankind.”
Trump continued, stating that the last 250 years of relations between the U.S. and China form “the groundwork for a future that serves both nations.”
“We have much in common—we value hard work, bravery, and achievements. We cherish our families and our countries,” he stated.
“By coming together, we can harness these shared values to forge a future of greater prosperity, collaboration, joy, and peace for the generations to come,” he added.
As his toast concluded, Trump invited President Xi to the United States on September 24.
“I would like to raise my glass to toast the rich and lasting relationship between the American and Chinese peoples. This is indeed a special bond, and I want to express my gratitude once more. It has been a remarkable experience. Thank you, President Xi,” he finished.
Mr. Xi acknowledged the upcoming 250th anniversary of American independence on July 4.
“This year also marks the 250th anniversary of America’s quest for independence. Over 300 million Americans have rekindled their patriotism, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit as they embark on a new journey for the country’s future,” Xi said.
“Both the Chinese and American peoples are exceptional. Advancing the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation and enhancing America’s greatness can be closely linked,” he added. “We can mutually support each other’s success and contribute to the well-being of the entire world.”
Xi raised a toast to “the growth and prosperity of both China and the United States, the welfare of our peoples, the bright future of our bilateral relationship, the friendship between our societies, and the good health of President Trump and everyone gathered here.”
