President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are in discussions about a significant trade deal involving the US purchasing Ukrainian drones that have been proven effective in combat, while Ukraine would procure various weapons from the US.

In a statement posted on Wednesday, Zelensky addressed ongoing negotiations with Trump, emphasizing the potential for innovative agreements that would enhance both nations’ aviation technologies.

This contract could have major implications for US military and national security. Officials and drone specialists have pointed out that the US is lagging behind both Russia and China, noting that American forces are inadequately prepared to use or defend against the types of UAVs that adversaries are deploying.

Zelensky mentioned, “The American people need this technology, so you need to have it in your arsenal,” referring to Ukraine’s advancements in drone capabilities.

“I think this is a really huge deal,” he added.

Drone warfare has emerged as a prominent strategy in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with both sides conducting numerous air strikes daily using UAVs loaded with explosives.

Experts have long cautioned that many nations are closely monitoring such conflicts to adapt to the realities of modern warfare.

With Russia developing drones inspired by Iranian designs, Ukraine is ramping up its own production to counter these threats. A notable incident occurred last month when 117 Ukrainian drones targeted and disabled several Russian bombers across four military bases in an operation named “Operation Spider Web.”

Recently, a Ukrainian drone managed to travel 800 miles into Russia, striking an anti-aircraft missile factory in Izhevsk. In May, Ukraine celebrated a successful mission where maritime drones engaged Russian SU-30 fighter jets in the Black Sea.

Zelensky has highlighted the importance of drones in defending against Russian invasions over the past three years, sharing lessons learned with the US and NATO to prepare for a new generation of warfare.

“We are ready to share this experience with our partners in the US and other European nations,” he mentioned, also noting ongoing discussions with Denmark, Norway, and Germany.

Warnings have been issued about America’s gaps in drone technology and its application in warfare. An official expressed concern, stating, “We all know the same thing. We’re not providing American fighters with what we need to survive today’s war.” He questioned the readiness of the US if conflict were to erupt tomorrow.

This concern came to light during a recent four-day testing camp in Alaska, where soldiers and civilian contractors faced numerous failures, leading to crashes of prototype drones.

Some drones were completely unresponsive, and one that did manage to take off struck an unintended target.

The proposed “mega-trade” initiative aligns with US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s recent directive to address the shortcomings in US drone production.

A memo from the Pentagon underscored the necessity for the US to keep pace with the global surge in military drone manufacturing.

Hegseth remarked, “We were brought here to rebuild our troops and align our capabilities with today’s threats,” recognizing that while enemies are successfully producing large numbers of affordable drones, the US has been hindered by bureaucratic delays.

Hegseth also featured in a video showcasing drones developed by Neros, a startup from California that has been testing and refining technologies in Ukraine.
