Trump Unveils $22 Billion Renovation Plan for Dulles International Airport

President Donald Trump has presented a substantial $22 billion initiative to renovate Dulles International Airport in Virginia. This effort aims to revamp a key international access point.

Washington Dulles International Airport serves as the primary airport for Washington, DC, situated about 42 miles from the downtown area in Northern Virginia, covering parts of Loudoun and Fairfax Counties.

The plans reportedly involve adding over 5 million square feet by demolishing and replacing the aging C and D concourses, along with constructing a new parking facility designed to accommodate around 32,000 vehicles.

Previously, in December, Trump had criticized the layout of the airport, calling it “poorly designed” and insisting it required a total renovation. However, this new project aims to retain the iconic main terminal, originally designed by distinguished Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen, whose work Trump has often praised.

Trump stated, “This airport is considered one of the worst airports in the world…We’re going to make it probably the best airport through hard work and good thought process.”

In addition to expanding the concourse and parking areas, the renovation will phase out Dulles’ long-reliant People Mover lounge. Instead, a new horseshoe train system will efficiently transport passengers between the main terminal and concourse.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy noted that the project will not receive federal funding. Financing will instead come through collaborations with airlines, which will contribute to modernizing the facilities they wish to use.

“United [Airlines] will participate in some of the payments, but the airlines that participate in the project will pay the cost,” Duffy explained from the Oval Office.

Trump addressed reporters about the timeline for the renovations, expressing optimism about rapid progress. He mentioned that while the review will require substantial funding, Congressional approval may also be necessary to proceed. Nonetheless, he highlighted the bipartisan support for this initiative, indicating a strong willingness across party lines to enhance the Capital Region’s vital international hub.

“This airport is considered one of the worst airports in the world…We’re going to make it probably the best airport with hard work and the right thought process,” Trump remarked. He added that this transformation is part of ongoing efforts to make Washington, D.C. “safe and beautiful again” from both an aviation and crime prevention standpoint.
