Trump announces Mike Waltz as UN ambassador pick

President Donald Trump tapped for the UN ambassador for former national security adviser Mike Waltz after Waltz was expelled from the National Security Council office on Thursday.

“We are pleased to announce that we will nominate Mike Waltz as the next U.S. ambassador for the United Nations,” Trump posted on Truth Social on Thursday.

“From the days of uniformed on the battlefield, in Congress and as my national security adviser, Mike Waltz worked hard to put our nation's interests first. He knows he will do the same in his new role. As Secretary Marco Rubio continues his strong leadership in the national sector, we will make America safe for you.

Waltz posted to X shortly after the announcement that Trump was “deeply honored to continue my service to President Trump and our great nation.”

In his post, Trump added that after Rubio left the waltz on Thursday, he will also serve as his interim national security adviser. In 1973, then-President Richard Nixon made a similar move when he nominated national security adviser Henry Kissinger as Secretary of State, State Department records show.

Waltz and other national security board staff were expelled from their offices on Thursday at the exit of the second Trump administration's most famous executive office. Trump announced that the UN ambassador had named the waltz as the news unfolded several hours after it began to circulate.

The former national security adviser was at the heart of the Signal Chat leak catastrophe that unfolded in March, when Atlantic Magazine's editor-in-chief was accidentally added to a group chat with well-known Trump officials such as Secretary of Defense Waltz. The administration has claimed that no material classified in group chats has been shared and that the president is confident in his national security team, but weeks of speculation mounts that Waltz will be removed from his position amid the fallout of the chat leak.

Several names have come to mind for the UN ambassador after RN.Y. Rep. Elise Stefanik retracted her appointment, including David Friedman, who includes former Israeli ambassador, in March before Trump slammed the waltz for his role in the new administration. Ellie Kohanim, former deputy envoy for monitoring and fighting anti-Semitism in the State Department under the former Trump administration. Special Presidential Envoy Richard Grenell. Grenell said he was “hard no” about serving in the role of UN ambassador ahead of Trump's announcement.

Trump announced Stephanik as the original choice for his November 2024 role a few days after the successful election against former vice president Kamala Harris. However, a New York lawmaker last month raised concerns that Trump's orbit would reduce the slim majority of GOP in her absence.

Trump urged the United Nations immunity and LAX visa rules amid national security concerns.

Concerns came ahead of two special House elections in Florida on April 2nd. This was ultimately won by both Republicans, but there was a much slimmer margin than their previous elections.

Stefank told Fox News' Sean Hannity that he resigned from the confirmation process as UN ambassador in March as both the margins of the home's GOP combined with the need to combat democratic “corruption” in New York's hometown.

“It was a combination of New York corruption, special elections and home margins seen under Cathy Hochul,” Stefanik said of “Hoanity” in March. “I was at home. It's hard to count these votes every day. And we will continue to deny our political prognosis and continue to bring victory on behalf of President Trump and, importantly, voters in this country.”

“The President knows that. He and I have multiple conversations today and we are committed to providing results on behalf of Americans, and as always, I am committed to providing results on behalf of my constituents,” she added.

“A very tough majority, I don't want to get a chance from others running in Elise's seat. People love Elise and there's nothing to worry about election day with her. There are others who can do a good job at the UN,” he added.

“Many of these conflicts we are working on should be resolved, or at least we have to get some help to resolve them. But it seems we will never get help. That should be the main purpose of the United Nations,” Trump continued.
