President Donald Trump announced that Edan Alexander, the last American hostage, is set to be released by Hamas after almost two years of captivity. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump expressed his happiness over Alexander’s return, stating, “We are pleased to see Edan Alexander, an American citizen who has been held hostage since October 2023, is back at his family’s home.” He thanked everyone involved in securing this significant release, calling it a step taken in good faith by the U.S. toward ending the ongoing conflict and bringing all living hostages home.
Trump remarked, “Hopefully this is the first of the last steps needed to end this cruel conflict. I will make that day a very advanced celebration!”
Alexander, who holds dual American-Israeli citizenship, was captured in Gaza on October 7 during a series of attacks by Hamas on southern Israel.
The announcement follows news that terrorist groups have been in contact with the current U.S. administration. They mentioned that Alexander’s release is part of broader measures aimed at establishing ceasefires, opening borders, and facilitating humanitarian aid to Gaza.
It remains unclear when exactly Alexander will be freed. A statement from the Hostages and Missing Family Forum expressed support for Alexander’s family, stating it was “accepting and supporting the Alexander family.” The same forum emphasized the need for a comprehensive agreement to guarantee the release of all remaining hostages.
As Trump marked his 100th day in office, five American families continue to seek the release of relatives still held captive. Recently, a group of Congress members urged the president to employ all diplomatic avenues to ensure the safety and release of these hostages.
Alexander, now 21, moved to Israel at 18 and served in the IDF Golani Brigade. He opted to stay at the military base rather than return home when his mother visited, although there were options to visit family.
At present, there are still about 59 hostages in Gaza, with at least 24 confirmed alive. Alexander has spent two birthdays imprisoned.
