Trump and Mamdani Anticipate Civil Meeting
President Donald Trump recently shared with Brian Kilmeade from Fox News that he expects his upcoming meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zoran Mamdani to be “very civil.” Trump mentioned, “I think we’re going to do well.” He believes that despite their different political ideologies, both he and Mamdani have a shared goal: “We want to make New York strong.”
Mamdani Commits to Collaboration
Mamdani, for his part, has expressed his intention to work with Trump to “make life more affordable” for New Yorkers, even acknowledging that their policies might clash. He noted that the meeting would provide a platform for New Yorkers to voice their concerns, stating, “I’m going to make it clear to President Trump that I will work with him on any agenda that benefits New Yorkers. If there is an agenda that hurts New Yorkers, I will be the first to say something.”
Discussing Mamdani’s previous critical comments made during his victory speech, Trump conceded that he had “hit him a little harder” in the campaign. The president seemed puzzled by Mamdani’s phrase “turn up the volume,” indicating he wasn’t entirely sure what was meant by it.
Trump’s Colorful Remarks
Notably, Trump referred to Mamdani as the “Communist Mayor of New York” in a post on Truth Social, highlighting the tense backdrop against which their meeting will occur.
Levitt’s Comments
White House press secretary Caroline Levitt reiterated the significance of the meeting during a briefing, stating that having a self-identified communist as mayor of America’s largest city is noteworthy. She emphasized Trump’s willingness to engage with anyone in pursuit of solutions for the American people, regardless of political affiliation or location.
Despite their tumultuous exchanges in the past—Mamdani had made clear his intentions to oppose Trump during his campaign—the tone from both parties seems to have softened leading up to this meeting.
This is a developing story, and updates will follow as more information becomes available.
