Trump Optimistic About U.S.-Cuba Deal

President Donald Trump expressed hopefulness regarding the possibility of a deal with Cuba, suggesting that military action may not be necessary. His comments came after a tense exchange during the United Nations General Assembly, which led the Cuban delegation to exit the meeting.

“I would say that Cuba and the U.S. will make a deal,” Trump stated to reporters on Saturday. “I don’t think we’ll need the military. Cuba is failing very badly. We want to help Cuba. We want to open Cuba up to our people.”

He added that allowing American citizens to visit Cuba would be beneficial for many Cuban Americans who wish to reconnect with their heritage.

Travel to Cuba is technically allowed under specific conditions, with licenses available for various categories. However, the U.S. Embassy maintains that tourism remains prohibited under longstanding economic sanctions.

In a recent tweet, Trump reinforced his perspective, saying he does not anticipate any military intervention in Cuba, despite unconfirmed reports suggesting that such actions were being prepared.

Trump’s recent statements echoed earlier remarks made at the UN meeting in New York, where he criticized the Cuban government.

“My administration is also seeking a fundamental change in the situation in Cuba, where the communist regime is under great pressure – the biggest pressure they’ve ever been under,” he remarked. “It’s an absolutely failed state. It’s failing like never before, and it will fall.”

During that address, he noted that Secretary of State Marco Rubio, whose background includes Cuban immigrant parents, was actively engaged in discussions with Cuba.

Furthermore, Trump condemned Cuba for its association with Marxism, having increased his anti-communism rhetoric in recent months.

“The Cuban regime has also spent decades coordinating with the left-wing radicals and communist networks here in the United States. As our State Department has detailed, they’ve cultivated ties to subversive and radical groups such as the Communist Party USA, Antifa and the Dumocrat Socialists of America. Communism will never be coming to America, but freedom will be coming to Cuba.”

A State Department report released in July discussed Cuba’s influence over leftist and communist extremism within the U.S.

“For more than six decades, the Cuban regime has been the leading sponsor of radical leftism and Third Worldism in the United States,” noted Secretary Rubio at the time.
