Trump Appears to Believe America Is Short on Talent in Discussion About H-1Bs With Laura Ingraham

Trump and Ingraham Debate Foreign Workers

President Donald Trump had a contentious discussion with Laura Ingraham on her show Tuesday regarding the impact of foreign workers on the American job market.

Ingraham argued that if the U.S. workforce were to include hundreds of thousands of foreign workers, it could hinder wage increases for American workers. This prompted a strong reaction from Trump, who maintained that the U.S. must attract talent from abroad. When Ingraham questioned whether the U.S. actually has the talent it requires, Trump asserted that there are gaps in the domestic workforce that needed to be filled by international workers.

“Well, I understand your point,” Trump responded. “But we absolutely need to attract talent.” Ingraham contended, “We do have a lot of talent here,” to which Trump countered, “No, we don’t.”

Trump highlighted that many foreigners possess skills in crucial technologies, like battery manufacturing, reiterating that the U.S. must seek the best talent available. Furthermore, he introduced a hefty $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applications back in September, following concerns from some officials that this might displace average American workers.

This move drew criticism from Indian politicians who have relied heavily on the H-1B program, claiming it would negatively affect their employees.

In recent layoffs, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft have let go of significant numbers: approximately 27,000, 12,000, and 16,000 workers respectively from 2022 to late 2024. During this same timeframe, these companies successfully awarded over 61,000 H-1B visas for foreign workers, according to USCIS data.
