Trump applauds Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene's decision to leave Congress

Trump Responds to Greene’s Resignation Announcement

On Friday, President Trump reacted positively to Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene’s unexpected announcement of her resignation, calling it “great news” for the nation.

“I think it’s great news for the country,” he mentioned in a quick chat with ABC News. “It’s amazing,” he added, expressing surprise.

Trump noted that Greene, a Republican from Georgia, hadn’t disclosed her plans prior to her social media statement indicating she would leave office on January 5, 2026. He also mentioned that he didn’t intend to have a conversation with her about it.

Continuing early Saturday, Trump criticized Greene on Truth Social, referring to her as “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown.” He suggested that her resignation was influenced by declining poll numbers and her reluctance to contest a pro-Trump primary challenger.

In his post, Trump commented on Greene’s ties with a fellow Congressman as detrimental to her standing. He expressed a mix of gratitude and frustration, stating, “For some reason, Marjorie was in a bad mood, primarily because I refused to respond to her constant barrage. Yet, I will always be grateful to Marjorie and appreciate her service to our country!”

Greene has been a prominent supporter of Trump, but her criticism of his administration’s handling of certain issues, like those surrounding Jeffrey Epstein, caused some tension. Recently, Trump had pulled his support for her, indicating his backing for a challenger in the upcoming 2026 elections.

In her resignation letter, Greene expressed her discontent with the situation, stating, “I have too much self-respect and dignity, and I love my family too much… I refuse to be a ‘battered wife.’ I hope everything goes away and gets better.” Her departure will narrow the Republicans’ slim majority in the House, which stands at 219 to 213.

Interestingly, House Speaker Mike Johnson was reportedly unaware of Greene’s resignation beforehand, and a Republican aide characterized her decision as a “vengeful” act against the party leadership.

As of now, there hasn’t been an immediate comment from the White House or Johnson’s office regarding this development.
