Trump Applauds West Point Alumni for Canceling Ceremony to Honor 'Destructive, WOKE' Tom Hanks

Trump Responds to Cancellation of Hanks’ Award Ceremony

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump expressed approval on Monday after West Point alumni decided to cancel an awards ceremony meant to honor Tom Hanks, labeling the acclaimed actor as “disruptive” and “awakening.” Hanks was slated to receive the 2025 Sylvanus Thayer Award on September 25, but reports indicate that the alumni association made the cancellation decision last week.

“An important move!” Trump wrote in a social media post. He highlighted a desire for a cultural shift, calling for institutions like the Academy Awards to reassess their standards in pursuit of fairness and justice.

At present, there hasn’t been any response from West Point, the Alumni Association, or Hanks’ representative regarding the matter.

This situation emerges amid Trump’s efforts to influence higher education and military leadership. Over the summer, the Army Secretary instructed West Point to reconsider its hiring practices, particularly in connection with an outside organization’s actions that targeted job selections related to the country’s cybersecurity, which occurred during Joe Biden’s presidency.

Earlier this year, West Point took significant steps by disbanding 12 cadet clubs that were focused on ethnicity, gender, race, and sexuality. This was in alignment with the Trump administration’s campaign to eliminate diversity programs across the government. The academy also put back on display a painting of General Robert E. Lee in varying attire as part of a broader effort to reinstate Confederate names and memorials removed in previous years.

The Sylvanus Thayer Award has been given annually since 1958 to honor outstanding American citizens who embody ideals expressed in West Point’s motto. It’s named after one of the early directors of the military academy, often referred to as “The Father of West Point.” In a press release from June, Robert McDonald, chairman of the Alumni Association, remarked on Hanks’ significant contributions toward the positive representation of American service members and various government programs.

Retired Army Colonel Mark Beger, who heads the Alumni Association, commented that canceling the ceremony allows West Point to concentrate on its main mission of preparing officers for the U.S. Army. The previous year’s award recipient was former President Barack Obama.

Tom Hanks is notably politically active in Hollywood, supporting numerous Democratic candidates and progressive initiatives. He has endorsed Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Biden during their presidential runs and has voiced his disapproval of Trump on multiple occasions. In fact, during a 2016 interview, Hanks referred to Trump as a “self-involved gas bag.” He also expressed concerns over divisive issues during discussions about Biden’s inaugural activities and has been openly critical of various policies enacted by Trump.

Recently, Hanks in particular sparked controversy among Trump supporters with a caricature he drew during a special commemorating the 50th anniversary of Saturday Night Live.
