Trump Appoints Fmr Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker As NATO Ambassador

President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday nominated former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker to be the new U.S. ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

President Trump described Whitaker as “a strong warrior and a loyal patriot who will steadfastly advance and protect America's national interests.”

“Matt will strengthen relationships with our NATO allies and stand firm against threats to peace and stability. He will put America first,” Trump said in a statement. “I have full confidence in Matt's ability to represent the United States with strength, integrity, and unwavering dedication as we continue to advance peace through strength, freedom, and prosperity around the world. I look forward to working closely with him.”

“Matt is also a former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Iowa and graduated with a BA, MBA, and J.D. from the University of Iowa, where he played football and was a recipient of the Big Ten Medal of Honor,” Trump said. he added.

Wednesday's appointment comes at a critical time for the Trump campaign.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday formally lowered the bar for Russia's use of nuclear weapons, following President Joe Biden's decision to allow Ukraine to use U.S.-made missiles to attack Russian territory. .

The new principles would also encourage Moscow to launch a nuclear response to a conventional attack on Russia by a country supported by a nuclear-armed state.

Mr. Whitaker served as Acting Attorney General from November 2018 to February 2019.

This follows the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions at President Trump's request amid special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into allegations of Russian collusion by the Trump campaign. The investigation ended with the Justice Department finding there was no collusion between Russia and the 2016 Republican campaign.
