President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday selected Heisman Trophy winner and former U.S. Senate candidate Herschel Walker as U.S. ambassador to the Bahamas.

In his announcement, Trump cited Walker's involvement in youth sports and continued support for veterans across the country.

“A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL great, Herschel is a tireless advocate for youth sports. I co-chaired the President's Council on Nutrition,” Trump continued.

“Herschel has visited over 400 military installations around the world, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. Bobsled Team.”

Walker, known as a big supporter of Trump, ran for Georgia's Senate seat in 2022, but lost to Democrat Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.).

Walker, 62, was a three-year star football player at the University of Georgia, winning the Heisman Trophy in 1982, which is given to the best player in college football that season.

He also played 15 seasons in the NFL, including with the Dallas Cowboys before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings, which was considered a big move at the time. He also played for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.

He also played three seasons with the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League, which was owned by President Trump for a time before the league was disbanded.

Additionally, President Trump announced his selection of Nicole McGraw as the U.S. ambassador to Croatia. President Trump described her as a “philanthropist, businesswoman, and world-renowned art collector.”

“Nicole brought the arts to people through her work leading CANVAS Arts Charities and raised millions of dollars for neglected and abused children as a board member of Place of Hope,” Trump wrote. “She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BA in Art History and Studio Art. Congratulations Nicole!”

After announcing his nominees, President Trump concluded with a memo warning Senate Republicans not to make deals with Democrats to “rush” nominations this month.

“To Senate Republicans: There is no agreement with Democrats to rush the nomination after this Congress ends,” Trump wrote. “I have won the greatest commission in 129 years, and I will appoint highly qualified people when I am sworn in in January.”
