Trump Names Jeanine Pirro as Interim U.S. Attorney for D.C.
President Donald Trump has appointed Jeanine Pirro, a former prosecutor and current Fox News host, as the interim attorney general in Washington, D.C. This decision follows his unsuccessful attempt to nominate Ed Martin.
Pirro has been a staunch supporter of Trump and previously hosted “The Five” on Fox News. She served as a Republican District Attorney in Westchester County, New York.
The president made the announcement through social media on Thursday, expressing his satisfaction with the choice. “We are pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim U.S. attorney for the District of Columbia,” he stated. He also highlighted her accomplishments, noting, “During her tenure, Janine was a powerful advocate for victims of crime.”
At 73 years old, Pirro has been friends with Trump for decades. The president’s initial nomination of Ed Martin faced opposition, particularly from Senator Tom Tillis, which led to this change. Tillis mentioned, “Most of my concerns were related to January 6th. Anyone who violated the boundaries should face consequences.”
Trump has indicated that Martin will be relocated to the Department of Justice, as part of three groups focused on investigating governmental allegations under the Biden administration. “Janine is very suited for this position and is considered one of the top lawyers in New York’s history,” he concluded.
Despite her experience, Pirro has faced criticism from both sides of the political spectrum. In 2019, she drew backlash for her comments about Representative Ilhan Omar, which led to a two-week suspension from Fox News. The network condemned Pirro’s remarks, stating they did not represent their views.
