Trump Establishes Task Force to Combat Fraud

On Monday, President Trump launched a Task Force aimed at tackling fraud, appointing Vice President J.D. Vance as its chair.

In a ceremony at the Oval Office, Trump signed the executive order, flanked by Vice President Andrew Ferguson, who will serve as vice chair, as well as the chairman of the Federal Trade Commission.

Will Schaaf, White House Chief of Staff, noted that this task force aims to address serious issues of fraud found in federally funded programs, particularly in states like Minnesota and California. The effort could potentially return significant sums—possibly billions of dollars—to taxpayers.

Schaaf mentioned, “This begins a whole-of-government strategy to tackle the serious problem of fraud in programs funded by the federal government across the nation.”

The order requires the task force to devise a national strategy to eliminate waste, fraud, and misuse in federal benefit programs, including those related to cash assistance, food, housing, and healthcare.

The task force is tasked with improving processes to verify eligibility, implementing preventative controls, identifying trends related to high-risk fraud, and dismantling fraudulent networks, as outlined in an official document.

It also aims to set minimum standards for anti-fraud measures to safeguard taxpayer-funded benefits. This includes establishing identification and documentation requirements, risk management strategies, audits, and corrective actions, ensuring that each agency contributes to developing actionable plans.

Vance pointed to an instance of fraud in Minnesota related to the Medicaid program for children with autism, expressing commitment to prevent such scams and ensure that Americans receive the benefits they deserve.

He stated, “This executive order compels the entire federal apparatus to do two things: halt fraud against American taxpayers and ensure rightful benefits reach the American people, not fraudsters.”

A representative for Vance elaborated on the urgency of tackling such misconduct, stating that fraudsters are robbing vulnerable citizens of essential services, wasting taxpayer dollars, and undermining the social safety net. The spokesperson underscored Vance’s pride in leading the new task force focused on combating widespread fraud and ensuring that states take appropriate measures to shield taxpayers from deceit.
