Donald Trump could appear in court in lower Manhattan today as he tries to overturn a 2023 ruling in a lawsuit involving author Jean Carroll.
Victoria Bekiempis, a Guardian court reporter, reports:
Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, is reportedly scheduled to appear at a hearing before the U.S. Second Circuit Court of Appeals this morning, but it's unclear whether he will appear, especially with the 2024 election looming in the final days.
A jury found in May 2023 that Trump assaulted Carroll in a department store fitting room nearly 30 years ago. The jury awarded $2 million for sexual assault and $3 million for defamation, alleging that Trump repeatedly disparaged Carroll's reputation after she came forward with her allegations against Trump nearly five years ago.
Carroll revealed the affair in a June 2019 New York magazine article, an excerpt from her then-upcoming book, “What Do We Need Men For? A Modest Proposal.” Trump responded by accusing Carroll of lying and trying to hurt him politically.
Carroll won a civil damages award against Trump in January of this year for $83.3 million. Judge Lewis Kaplan ruled that the jury's findings in the first trial – that Trump had sexually abused and defamed Carroll – stood.
