President-elect Donald Trump has asked a federal appeals court to reconsider overturning the $5 million E. Jean Carroll judgment.

On Tuesday, the president-elect's lawyers requested a hearing in which the entire court, rather than a select panel, would hear the case. This comes after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled last month that Trump had failed to prove he deserved a new trial.

In January 2024, a federal jury in New York City ruled that Trump should pay Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages and $65 million in punitive damages. Trump was not convicted of rape, but was convicted of sexual abuse and defamation. In that case, the former president was ordered to pay $5 million.

Carroll sought $12 million in the lawsuit, alleging that Trump sexually assaulted her at Manhattan's Bergdorf Goodman department store, across the street from Trump Tower, sometime in 1996.

Trump has repeatedly denied all allegations against him.

The jury concluded that Carroll was injured as a result of defamatory comments made by President Trump in June 2019, while he was still in the White House.

Mr. Carroll was awarded by a jury $11 million in reputation repair program damages and $7.3 million in total damages.

The jury determined that Ms. Carroll was harmed by President Trump's comments and awarded her $65 million in punitive damages, and determined that Ms. Carroll should receive $83.3 million in damages.

President Trump called the incident “disgraceful” and “the greatest witch hunt in history.”
