Trump Assassination Attempt Will Not Impact Biden’s Candidacy

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump will not affect incumbent President Joe Biden’s candidacy.

“Everyone in this country, regardless of political view, wishes former President Trump a speedy recovery, mourns the loss of innocent lives and those injured, and understands that any form of political violence is unacceptable. This is un-American and we must end this. In this tragic moment, I think it’s time for us all to take a deep breath, remember what this country is about, what a political movement is about, and have a serious discussion of serious ideas about how to address the serious problems facing this country. So if there’s any silver lining in this tragedy, let’s use this moment to think about how to move forward peacefully, constructively and intelligently,” Sanders said.

Host Kristen Welker asked, “There’s been a lot of debate about whether President Biden should pass the baton or whether he should be the standard-bearer, and in your op-ed you say enough of that debate is enough. You’re saying, frankly, it’s time to end the division about whether President Biden should be the nominee. Do you think this moment will affect that debate, and if so, how?”

“No, I don’t think so. I don’t think so. I mean, I think President Biden is the strongest candidate the Democratic Party has to offer,” Sanders said.
