Trump Addresses Violence in Chicago

In response to numerous shootings that occurred over the weekend in Chicago, President Donald Trump has spoken out about the alarming violence, asserting that he could effectively reduce crime in the city.

Reportedly, over 30 individuals were shot, including at least five fatalities, according to information from the Chicago Police Department (CPD). The totals vary depending on how the weekend’s timeframe is interpreted and when the statistics are reported.

Trump emphasized his capability to address the issue, proclaiming that he could resolve the crisis.

“Lot’s of Killing going on in Chicago,” Trump shared on his Truth Social platform. “Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help? I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest.”

The President also underscored his administration’s success in tackling crime in Washington, D.C.

“D.C. went from one of the worst, to one of the safest cities in the U.S.,” he remarked.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the city’s homicide rate fell by 60% in 2025, and overall crime decreased by 32%. However, the scenario in Chicago seems quite different; certain violent crimes have reportedly increased in the past year. As of mid-June, there were 172 fatal shootings in 2026, marking a 17% rise compared to the same time last year. Moreover, multi-victim shootings increased by 26%, and overall homicide victims climbed by nearly 9%.

Still, some statistics indicate a decrease in homicide rates compared to the years 2022 to 2024, which each recorded over 200 murders by mid-June.

A significant factor in this weekend’s surge in shootings stemmed from a mass shooting incident on Friday, where 13 people were reported injured, but thankfully no deaths occurred.

According to Chicago police, a red SUV approached a crowd, with two individuals inside opening fire around 11 p.m. The victims’ ages ranged from 17 to 47 years. This incident happened near West 95th Street and South Princeton Avenue, coinciding with a Juneteenth celebration. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson responded to the events with concern.

“I am heartbroken by the violence in Princeton Park last night. What should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones,” Johnson stated.
