Trump Attacks Mamdani Following NYC Mayoral Primary: 'Communist Crazy Person'

President Donald Trump has taken aim at Zoran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist who is currently leading in the New York City mayoral primary, labeling him a “communist madman.”

In a post on social media, Trump criticized prominent Democrats like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) for their support of Mamdani, suggesting they were “groping him.”

“It’s happened—Democrats have officially crossed the line,” Trump stated. “Zohran Mamdani, a total communist madman, just won the Democratic primary and is on track for the mayor’s office. We’ve had a radical before, which was quite absurd.”

“He doesn’t look good, his voice is rough, he’s not the sharpest tool in the shed, and he’s got all those clueless supporters, even our esteemed Palestinian senator, Chuck Schumer, is backing him,” Trump noted. “This is a major moment in our nation’s history!”

This reaction from Trump followed Mamdani’s lead in the primary race, surpassing Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) and City Director Brad Lander.

Mamdani secured 43.5% of the votes—around 432,305—while Cuomo garnered 36.4% (361,840 votes), and Lander managed 11.3% (112,349). This information was reported by the Associated Press.

Mamdani declared his victory on social media, expressing that he felt “honored” to be a Democratic candidate for New York City mayor. Under the ranked voting system, he explained, a candidate winning more than 50% of the first-choice votes automatically secures victory; otherwise, the counting continues in rounds.

According to the New York City Election Commission’s website:

If a candidate gathers over 50% of the first choice votes, all those votes are counted, and that candidate wins.

If not, counting moves to the next round. Candidates in the last place will be eliminated, and their voters will have their votes counted for their next choice.

This process continues until only two candidates remain, and the one with the most votes wins.

Trump’s words imply that some Democrats, including Mayor Eric Adams (D) and Rep. Laura Gillen (D-NY), have raised concerns that Mamdani may be “too extreme” to lead the city and referred to him as a “snake oil salesman.”

Breitbart News previously highlighted that Mamdani, who proudly expresses his far-left socialist views, is recognized as the son of Mira Nair, an acclaimed Indian-American filmmaker, known for works like Salam Bombay and Monsoon Wedding, and that he grew up in a privileged environment.

Recently, Mamdani, endorsed by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), proposed an idea for creating urban-owned grocery stores.

“We’re looking to redirect city funds from supermarket chains focused on profit to instead establish city-owned grocery stores,” Mamdani stated in a video.

“These stores would operate without profit motives or the burden of property taxes and rent, and we will pass on those savings to the community,” he added.
