Lawyers for former President Trump on Wednesday requested a 30-day extension to pay the $355 million corporate fraud judgment imposed on him last week.
the lawyers argued New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said there was an “unseemly haste” in carrying out the sentence, “especially given the gravity of the sentence.”
President Trump has one month to find the funds to pay the sentence after the sentence is carried out. Wednesday’s request would delay the execution of the judgment itself by 30 days.
Mr. James had previously threatened to seize some of Mr. Trump’s assets if he could not come up with the funds.
The $355 million judgment handed down Friday, along with an additional $100 million in prejudgment interest, is the largest financial penalty imposed against Trump and his companies in his various lawsuits. . Experts speculate that the hefty fine may force President Trump to sell part of his real estate empire.
The fraud case found that Trump falsely altered his net worth and the value of various properties in order to obtain more favorable loan terms. New York state claimed he sent false information to banks and insurance companies, which the state claimed was evidence of fraud.
As part of the verdict against Trump, he was also banned from operating a business in New York for three years.
The former president has vowed to appeal the ruling.
