Trump-Backed Hung Cao Romps in Virginia Senate Primary

Former Navy Capt. Hung Kao easily won the Republican nomination for Senate in Virginia on Tuesday night, earning the right to face off against Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) in a key state where President Donald Trump and President Joe Biden are locked in a close race.

Cao outperformed four other challengers and was predicted by multiple media outlets to win the race within 20 minutes of the race’s finish at 7pm ET.

Cao came out on top with about 25% of the expected votes received and about 75% of the reported votes.

Cao thanked his supporters after announcing his victory and directly linked his campaign to Biden’s rejection of his border policies.

“That our victory coincided with Joe Biden’s illegal immigration amnesty date underscores the importance of the November election,” Kao said. Posts “For women like Laken Riley and Rachel Morin, the Biden-Cain open borders policy was literally a matter of life and death.

Kao contrasted his own naval service with Cain’s long political career.

“I served in the Navy for 25 years and Tim Kaine served in public office for 30,” he posted, “and taxpayers signed our pay checks for the same amount of time.”

“Here’s the difference: Tim Kaine got rich, and I got hurt.”

Donald Trump endorsed Kao in May, saying on Truth Social that “Kao will stop inflation, grow our economy, secure our borders, provide strong support for our amazing military and veterans, and fight tirelessly to protect the Second Amendment, which is constantly under attack.”

Trump’s much-needed endorsement sealed Cao’s election victory.

Kaine, a former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s unsuccessful running mate in 2016, is sure to run a well-funded campaign.

“Cain has already spent $2 million on television ads heading into the fall and he intends to pollute the airwaves with lies not only about me but about himself,” Kao said.

Trump may place particular emphasis on this race because Kao is facing off against Trump’s 2016 rival in a state that Trump is likely to hold.
