Trump Announces $3 Billion Partnership with Medical Technology Firm
President Donald Trump recently revealed a significant collaboration with a major medical technology company aimed at securing a $3 billion investment in the manufacturing of hospital equipment within the United States.
“HUGE INVESTMENT WIN for NEBRASKA AND THE U.S.!” Trump exclaimed in a Truth Social post on Monday night.
He emphasized that Becton Dickinson (BD), one of the largest manufacturers of medical devices, has committed to a $3 BILLION investment to enhance the domestic production of essential medical items, such as syringes and lab kits, which are vital for American patients and hospitals.
According to Trump, Nebraska will receive the largest share of this investment, with over $1 billion allocated to increase production of several products, including needles crafted from American steel.
“No one likes needles — But, if you need one, it should be made of American Steel in the U.S.A.,” he joked.
He further explained that BD’s decision is influenced by his strong medical device tariffs, which are set to take effect by year-end. “BUILD IN AMERICA, HIRE AMERICAN WORKERS, AND TREAT AMERICAN PATIENTS FAIRLY — OR PAY!”
In a press statement, BD referred to this initiative as a “landmark partnership with the U.S. Government” intended to bolster domestic manufacturing and enhance the resilience of supply chains for essential medical supplies that healthcare professionals and patients rely on daily.
Founded in the late 1800s by Maxwell Becton and Fairleigh Dickinson, BD is widely recognized for its extensive range of devices, including syringes and diagnostic systems. The company plans to invest $19 billion in the U.S. in the coming years, which will include not just capital investments but also significant operational and supply chain enhancements. Notably, $3 billion of this sum is earmarked specifically for expanding manufacturing across various production sites nationwide, with a target to increase U.S. output by around “5 billion essential medical consumables annually.”
Moreover, BD has committed to making 100% of its needles used domestically from American-made steel, aligning with the Trump administration’s objectives to enhance the competitiveness of the U.S. steel industry.
“This agreement reflects a shared commitment between the U.S. Government and BD to strengthening America’s healthcare infrastructure and expanding U.S. manufacturing capacity,” said Tom Polen, chairman, CEO and president of BD. He added that the administration acknowledges the critical nature of investing in a secure healthcare supply chain, and BD is well-positioned to support this vision due to its scale and innovation capabilities.
Polen noted, “For nearly 130 years, BD has partnered with health systems and governments both in the U.S. and globally to tackle essential healthcare challenges. We are proud to build on that legacy through significant investment in U.S. manufacturing and innovation, always focused on advancing healthcare for patients, providers, and communities worldwide.”
