Trump begins the week with new discussions on foreign policy regarding the Ukraine conflict.

Trump’s Foreign Policy Takes Center Stage with Zelensky Visit

This week, foreign policy is back in the spotlight, especially with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky visiting the White House. His trip is part of ongoing efforts to mediate peace between Moscow and Kyiv.

These meetings follow closely after Trump’s summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which took place on Friday in Anchorage. During that gathering, there was a push for a final peace agreement, with both leaders calling for a ceasefire. Trump even shared some insights about his conversation with Putin during a phone call with Zelensky from Air Force One.

European Leaders Join Forces to Support Ukraine

While the White House has yet to unveil the details of the meeting, several prominent European allies are expected to join Zelensky. NATO’s Executive Director Mark Latte, European Commission’s Ursula von der Leyen, along with leaders from France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and Finland, all confirmed their attendance.

Over the weekend, Zelensky remarked on his last visit to the White House, which was abruptly cut short due to tensions involving both Trump and Vice President JD Vance. He expressed hope that Monday’s discussions would be more constructive than their previous encounter back in February.

Trump’s ongoing dialogues with former Soviet states pave the way for a trilateral summit involving the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine.

Trump: Moving Forward on a Ukrainian-Russian Peace Deal

As the weekend unfolded, it became clear that Russia remains skeptical about the likelihood of a trilateral agreement. Zelensky emphasized in a press conference that Ukraine would reject any peace deal undermining its sovereignty.

Trump suggested that if Zelensky were to concede the contentious Donbas region to Russia, it might facilitate an end to hostilities. This region, crucial to Ukraine’s economy due to its coal and steel industries, holds significant strategic importance.

Zelensky stated clearly, “The Ukrainian constitution makes it impossible to abandon territory and trading sites.” He reinforced that Zelensky and the EU firmly oppose the transfer of any Ukrainian land to Russia.

The Ukrainian president remarked that certain fundamental issues regarding territorial discussions should be solely addressed by the leaders involved.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio downplayed reports suggesting Trump’s support for Russia’s terms. He pointed out that territorial matters are ultimately for Zelensky to decide, asserting that Trump’s initiatives aim to narrow down the complex issues surrounding the ongoing conflict.
