Trump believes Cuomo has a strong chance in the NYC mayoral election against Mamdani

President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in former New York governor Andrew Cuomo’s prospects in the New York City mayoral race, particularly against Democratic candidate Zoran Mamdani. “You think he has a good shot in winning,” Trump remarked to reporters during a Tuesday briefing.

This statement came shortly after Cuomo declared his intention to continue his independent campaign for mayor following his defeat in the Democratic primary last month, where he lost to Mamdani amid a crowded field. Cuomo, who previously served three terms, is aiming for a political comeback after stepping down in 2021 due to various scandals.

Cuomo’s defeat has stunned many within the Democratic party, as the 33-year-old Mamdani, a state legislator from Queens and the first Muslim and millennial mayor, recently secured a significant victory. Trump’s assessment of Cuomo seems to suggest that he runs a “tough campaign.”

Mamdani has garnered support from influential figures like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sen. Bernie Sanders, capitalizing on a vibrant campaign that resonated with voters concerned about affordability and living costs in New York City.

Trump has been vocal about his concerns regarding Mamdani, whom he describes as a “communist,” emphasizing that the race isn’t over and hinting at the possibility of more candidates entering the fray. He suggested that Mamdani’s comments and actions, particularly on social media, have raised eyebrows within the Republican camp, citing past controversies, including Mamdani’s intentions to arrest Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Cuomo, during his primary campaign’s last day, warned about Trump’s influence and pledged to resist his agenda if he wins the mayoral seat, trying to position himself as a defender of New York against possible federal interference.

Mamdani’s camp responded to Trump’s comments, with spokesperson Jeffrey Lerner congratulating Cuomo on his alignment with Trump, suggesting that Mamdani’s victory already speaks volumes. Meanwhile, current Mayor Eric Adams also figures into the general election, as he seeks re-election despite facing his own controversies.

Adams’ reputation has taken a hit, with allegations of bribery and fraud lingering over his administration, though corruption charges were dismissed earlier this year. His relationship with Trump might shift in light of future immigration policies.

In a video message, Cuomo reiterated his commitment to the race, asserting that only a small percentage of New Yorkers participated in the primary, indicating that he still has a chance come the general election in November. While acknowledging Mamdani’s win, he criticized his opponent’s approach, calling for more substantial solutions.

Cuomo is, however, facing an uphill battle. Recent polling indicates that despite Mamdani’s strong showing, Cuomo might struggle to secure a broader base within the predominantly Democratic landscape of New York City.

Amid all this, independent candidates like Jim Walden and Curtis Sliwa are also emerging as potential challengers, with discussions around conducting surveys to gauge their support against Mamdani. The dynamics of the campaign are indeed shifting, leaving many questioning the future course of the election.
