Trump Urges Republicans to Abolish Filibuster Amid Ongoing Government Shutdown
As the government shutdown approaches a month, President Trump is calling for Republicans to consider abolishing the filibuster. Since the shutdown’s start on October 1, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic lawmakers have repeatedly used the filibuster to block funding resolutions from the House.
In a post on TruthSocial, Trump criticized Democrats, stating they have “completely lost wisdom and any sense of reality.” He urged Republicans to take bold action and employ the “nuclear option” to eliminate the filibuster. He went on to assert that current Democratic behavior is a manifestation of what he terms “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
Trump expressed concern over Democratic plans to redirect significant funds from healthcare to undocumented immigrants, claiming this would unfairly burden American citizens. He insists that Republicans need to act decisively to prevent such outcomes and suggested that ending the filibuster could lead to a quicker resolution to the shutdown.
The former president recalled that Democrats had previously sought to eliminate the filibuster themselves, recognizing its power. He believes Republicans can now capitalize on that situation and end the impasse if they act decisively.
In a later post, Trump repeated his call to eliminate the filibuster, emphasizing that the Democrats’ current stance leaves little choice. He described the Democratic Party as having gone “thoroughly crazy,” and framed the filibuster’s removal as crucial for moving forward.
During Trump’s first term, Democrats often used the filibuster to thwart significant legislation aligning with his policies, including initiatives focused on women’s sports and abortion rights.
As the shutdown continues, Senate Majority Leader John Thune mentioned the possibility of lifting the filibuster among Republicans, although he characterized the discussion as complex and somewhat awkward. He noted that while it’s been a consideration, it’s not something anyone should take lightly.
In response to the shutdown, Trump and his administration have sought other avenues to pressure Democrats. Trump met with the director of the Office of Management and Budget to explore reducing the federal workforce as part of the government closure. Reports surfaced that layoffs commenced just days after the shutdown, affecting around 4,000 employees, although further details regarding the layoffs were paused later on.
