Trump Advocates for Elections in Ukraine Amid Ongoing Conflict
In a recent interview, Trump expressed that Ukraine should consider holding new elections, even as it contends with the ongoing war against Russia. He cautioned that Kiev is nearing a point where it might “no longer be a democracy.”
“I think now is the right time. It’s crucial for them to hold an election,” he remarked to Politico’s Dasha Burns. “They’re using the war as a reason to postpone elections, but I believe the Ukrainian people will want, and should want, to choose their leaders.”
According to Ukraine’s constitution, elections are not allowed during martial law, which was declared by President Volodymyr Zelensky in response to Russia’s invasion back in February 2022. Under normal circumstances, Zelensky’s term and the current Ukrainian parliament’s terms would have concluded in May and August 2024, respectively.
Regarding the possibility of elections during wartime, Trump noted, “Mr. Zelensky will likely win.” He added, “We really can’t know the outcome. But they haven’t had elections in a long time. They discuss democracy, but it’s reached a stage where it feels more like it isn’t democracy anymore.”
Trump also addressed comments made by his son, Donald Trump Jr., who suggested that the president might consider withdrawing support from Ukraine. Trump clarified, “That’s not true, but it’s not entirely incorrect either.”
“They need to play ball,” he continued. “If they don’t engage with the proposed agreements, relations with Russia could remain complex, as Russia has the upper hand. They’re much larger and more powerful in that regard.”
While expressing admiration for the Ukrainian people’s courage and military efforts, Trump stated, “Generally speaking, you find that at some point size wins out.”
His remarks come amidst renewed efforts from his administration to seek an end to the ongoing conflict, which has been described as Europe’s deadliest since World War II. Trump mentioned that President Zelensky has not yet reviewed a recent peace framework developed by U.S. and Ukrainian negotiators.
“I wish he would take the time to read it,” Trump said. “Many lives are at stake. It would be beneficial if he would look it over. His staff has expressed favorable opinions about the proposal, but he hasn’t had a chance to read it. He should really find the time.”
