President Biden and former President Trump made millions of dollars during Thursday’s debate, the first of the 2024 presidential election.
The Biden campaign said it raised $14 million on the day of the debate and the morning after, and that the hour after the debate, from 11pm to midnight, was Biden’s busiest fundraising period since he began his reelection campaign in April 2023.
The Trump campaign reportedly raised $8 million on the day of the debate.
Biden raised $85 million in May and had $212 million in cash in June. Trump has not released details about his cash holdings, but he raised a staggering $141 million in May, far more than Biden.
Biden raised more money than Trump in the debate, but his poor performance sparked debate among Democrats and activists about whether he should resign, and even some of his former aides and supporters acknowledged that he performed poorly.
During an impassioned speech in North Carolina on Friday, Biden sought to ease fears about his leadership, acknowledging that “I don’t speak as smoothly as I used to. I don’t debate as well as I used to.”
White House and campaign officials denied rumors that Democrats began suggesting Thursday night that Trump was dropping out of the race.
