Trump Bringing Civility in Politics Down, Democrats Matching His Level

Sen. Andy Kim (D-NJ) said Sunday on CNN's “coalition status” that President Donald Trump is responsible for overcoming political courtesy.

Anchor Jake Tapper said, “Let's talk about the president's speech to Congress on Tuesday night, and more specifically, the reaction of some Democrats. House Democrats protested the joint address, they wore matching colours and held up pen paddles with various messages.”

Kim said, “Well, you know, this was the third time I've been in the room to address a joint session. And it's getting worse and worse. And that's just seeing Trump being so good at bringing the rest of the country down to his level. That is, when you see him start with a barrage of personal humiliation against people, including the people of the Chamber of Commerce, he's certainly the one who sets a tone that he doesn't care about the courtesy of this country in terms of how we can go and engage one of us.”

He added: It should push us to keep us at the highest standard. Yes, President Trump is bringing about degrading rhetoric, discourse and courtesy in politics. Whether you've seen it in Marjorie Taylor Green in the past or the people on my side of the aisle, I don't like the kind of behavior you're seeing throughout that room. We want to keep ourselves as a standard, but what we see is Donald Trump, which means that it reduces our politics to a level of hostility that the majority of Americans find unbearable. ”
