Trump calls for death penalty for all homicides in D.C.: 'A very strong deterrent'

Trump Proposes Death Penalty for Murders in D.C.

President Donald Trump has revealed his plan for the Department of Justice to pursue the death penalty in all murder cases within Washington, D.C. He argued that the death penalty serves as a “very strong prevention” against crime.

This proposal, however, faces significant hurdles. The death penalty has been banned in the district since 1981, and a 1992 referendum overwhelmingly rejected its reinstatement. Still, due to the federal structure in D.C., federal authorities maintain jurisdiction over certain legal matters, which might allow them to seek federal charges and, in some scenarios, the death penalty.

On Tuesday, shortly after the first reported murder since the commencement of his crackdown on crime, Trump put forth this proposal during a cabinet meeting.

“Everyone kills something in the capital, kills the death penalty. Death penalty,” Trump expressed. “If we kill someone in the capital of Washington, DC, we are seeking the death penalty. It’s a very powerful precaution, and everyone who hears it will agree,” he added.

On August 11th, Trump had previously issued an executive order that invoked section 740 of the District of Columbia Home Rules Act, effectively transferring control of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) to federal authorities. This was framed as a response to what officials described as an ongoing “crime emergency” in the district.

Trump’s comments have sparked discussions on social media, highlighting his firm stance on crime in Washington.
