The bill, introduced by Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), would require voters to show “proof of United States citizenship” to vote in federal elections, including the presidential election.
Under the proposed bill, to register to vote in an election, a person would need to present a passport, a U.S.-born photo ID or another form of photo ID and a document showing they were born in the U.S., such as a birth certificate.
In addition to requiring identification, the law would require non-U.S. citizens to be removed from voter registration rolls, and election officials would be required to ask for proof of U.S. citizenship before providing voter registration forms and warn of the consequences for not being a citizen.
According to the bill’s text, the law would direct the Department of Homeland Security, which oversees several immigration agencies, to determine whether its authorities should initiate deportation proceedings when a foreign national is found to be registered to vote in federal elections.
Donald Trump is calling on Republicans to pass the bill.
