Protests Escalate in San Francisco and Los Angeles
President Trump has made his stance clear in San Francisco, calling for the arrest of individuals wearing face masks amidst a violent confrontation involving thousands of anti-ICE protestors and law enforcement in Los Angeles.
“Arrest the people with facial masks now!” he posted emphatically on social media later on Sunday.
This directive follows an event where over 2,000 demonstrators clashed with officers, set vehicles on fire, blocked traffic, and looted stores, creating chaos in downtown LA for the third consecutive day.
On Saturday, Trump had mobilized 2,000 National Guard troops in response to the escalating protests around a federal building, which were fueled by tense immigration issues.
Additionally, he had 500 Marines on standby as unrest continued to grow.
“Bring the army!!!” Trump reiterated in another social media update on Sunday night.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell mentioned that the urgency to bring in troops was necessary, citing the protesters’ increasingly aggressive behavior that required a “reevaluation of the situation.”
McDonnell stated that the police felt “overwhelmed” by the protests and described an incident where officers were targeted with commercial-grade fireworks, expressing concern for their safety.
Notably, many protestors defied Trump’s call for masks, wearing them despite the circumstances.
In San Francisco, the situation mirrored that of LA, with protests erupting into further violence as the mob clashed with police clad in riot gear.
According to San Francisco police, at least two officers were injured during the confrontations.
Mayor Daniel Lurie emphasized his commitment to public safety, stating, “My number one priority as mayor is the safety of everyone who lives or works in San Francisco.” He acknowledged the right to peaceful protest but condemned any violent or destructive actions.
Lurie indicated that law enforcement had arrested approximately 60 individuals involved in the riots.
“Violence against law enforcement and civil servants is never acceptable. We’re now focused on cleanup efforts and ensuring public transportation is ready for future events,” he added.
He concluded with a commitment to continue supporting community organizations and building trust with local law enforcement, amidst ongoing challenges.
