Trump Advocates for Death Penalty as Crime Measure in DC
President Donald Trump is intensifying his focus on crime, advocating for the death penalty in Washington, D.C. During a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, he expressed the need for such a measure for anyone convicted of murder. Trump described this as a serious proposal aimed at significantly enhancing safety and improving the quality of life for city residents.
“We have no choice,” Trump stated. He emphasized, “If someone kills someone in the capital – Washington, DC – we’re going to ask for the death penalty.” He described the death penalty as a strong preventive measure and noted that most people he speaks to agree with him.
Still, Trump acknowledged that he isn’t entirely sure if the country is ready for such a drastic step. “So in Washington, the states will have to make their own decisions,” he continued. “But if someone kills someone… that’s the death penalty.”
His remarks came shortly after the federal government took action to bolster the Metropolitan Police Department and deploy the National Guard in response to rising crime rates. D.C. has recently reported a homicide rate that is notably high—27.3 murders per 100,000 residents—almost six times higher than in New York City. However, after his administration’s efforts, the murder rate in D.C. saw a significant decrease, going nearly two weeks without any murders.
During the Cabinet meeting, Trump interacted with Iris Tao, a White House correspondent for NTD News, who shared her own experiences with violence in the city. Tao recalled being a victim of armed robbery, which left a lasting impact on her. “I am very grateful to God…but I am also grateful to Mr. President,” she said, expressing appreciation for the perceived improvements in D.C.’s safety.
