Trump calls for the Smithsonian to swap out the 'odd modernist' statue for a 30-foot 'Washington Colossus'

On Friday, President Trump urged the Smithsonian to replace the existing “strange modernist” sculpture at the National Museum of American History in Washington, DC, with a 30-foot statue of George Washington. This request is part of a broader initiative aimed at honoring the first president of the United States as his 300th birthday approaches.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump proposed installing an 11-foot Washington statue that was recently displayed at the Freedom 250 Grand Prix Race. He suggested that it be dedicated on Constitution Day, September 17, 2026, and called for a five-year exhibition that reflects Washington’s contributions and sacrifices. Once the new statue is ready, he wants it to replace the current sculpture called “Infinity.”

“We should replace a sculpture that says nothing about America with the man who truly embodies everything that America represents,” Trump highlighted, pointing towards a need for better recognition of Washington as the country prepares to celebrate his 300th birthday in 2032.

The existing sculpture, “Infinity,” designed by abstract artist Jose de Rivera, was dedicated in 1967. It holds the distinction of being the first piece of modern art commissioned by the US government for the National Mall.

In another post, Trump expressed that the “Infinity” sculpture lacks the inspirational quality that a statue of Washington would provide, stating, “That strange modernist sculpture tells visitors nothing about America, inspires no one, and honors none of our Great American Heroes. George Washington does. He is easily America’s Greatest Hero. Without him, our Country and our Freedoms wouldn’t exist.”

The president criticized the museum for not properly celebrating Washington and the other Founding Fathers during the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence. He lamented the absence of mentions of significant events, like Washington’s crossing of the Delaware in 1776, in the museum’s exhibits, asserting that these pivotal moments deserve more recognition.

This call for change comes amid news that Lonnie Bunch III, the head of the Smithsonian Institution, is retiring after having conflicts with the Trump administration regarding the portrayal of American history in the museums. Trump criticized the museum’s focus on a “Center for Restorative History” and “Decolonization Plan” for giving excessive attention to oppressed groups while neglecting those who have triumphed against adversity.

He suggested that the “Center for Restorative History” should be transformed into a “Center for American Heroes,” emphasizing the need to highlight the stories of Americans who have overcome significant challenges and made contributions to the nation.

“Instead of ideological activism, the staff at America’s taxpayer-funded National History Museum should prioritize a fair and coherent depiction of America’s story, starting with George Washington,” he concluded.
