Trump calls Sen Cassidy a 'sleazebag' during attack on Louisiana primary day

Trump’s Criticism of Senator Cassidy

President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Senator Bill Cassidy (R-La.) in a post on Truth Social, labeling him a “scumbag” and “terrible person.” This outburst highlighted Trump’s discontent with Cassidy as he runs for re-election.

Earlier this year, Trump endorsed Rep. Julia Letlow (R-Louisiana), who is running against Cassidy in the primary, reiterating his support for her in Saturday’s message. “Vote for Julia L. today. She is a winner who will never let you down,” he stated.

Trump’s harsh words for Cassidy were largely aimed at the senator’s decision to convict him during the 2021 impeachment process. He expressed frustration, writing, “Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana is a disloyal disaster,” pointing out that Cassidy’s campaign initially claimed loyalty to him. Trump criticized the impeachment, calling it a “total ‘bulls—!'” and accused Cassidy of knowing the accusations were unfounded at that time yet ignoring them.

Cassidy had voted to convict Trump on one article of impeachment that alleged he incited the January 6 riot. In his defense at that time, Cassidy remarked, “Our Constitution and our country matter more than anyone else. I voted guilty because President Trump is guilty.”

Since the impeachment, the relationship between Trump and Cassidy has soured significantly. As the chairman of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Cassidy played a key role in Trump’s nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services but insisted on several conditions, particularly criticizing Kennedy’s previous views on vaccine safety.

Trump also criticized Cassidy for not supporting Kennedy Jr.’s ally, Casey Means, for the Surgeon General position. In an April post, Trump asserted, “Senator Bill Cassidy…has stood in the way of Casey Means,” emphasizing his disappointment with Cassidy’s actions.

With the Republican primary in Louisiana approaching, Trump has intensified his attacks on Cassidy while continuing to endorse Letlow, whom he had backed even before officially entering the race.

Letlow previously expressed her gratitude for Trump’s support, describing it as an “amazing” and “once-in-a-lifetime honor” to have him encourage her candidacy.
