Trump calls the Washington Commanders a 'bad name' during White House event

Former President Donald Trump recently expressed his thoughts on the Washington Commanders’ renaming during an event at the White House. He was signing an executive order aimed at reinstating the president’s physical fitness test when he took the opportunity to comment on the franchise’s controversial name change.

“I’m not even sure what their last name is,” Trump remarked. “Is it a commander or something? Commander, that’s not a good name.” He also referred to the former team name, the Redskins, as a “legend,” encouraging the organization to reclaim it.

Trump reiterated similar sentiments at the White House, suggesting that the Cleveland Guardians should revert to their previous name, the Indians. “That was the original franchise—1903 or so, I think,” he noted. “What’s the issue with the word ‘Indian’ anyway? Who’s actually upset about it?”

Recently, he called for the Redskins name to be reinstated, even hinting that he might impede funding for a new $3.7 billion stadium project planned for the old RFK Stadium site in D.C. The project is currently in the design and negotiation phase, with groundbreaking anticipated in 2026 and completion expected by 2030. The organization is collaborating with the DC Council to finalize the deal.
