Trump can power the US into the future with a muscular nuclear energy policy

President-elect Donald J. Trump's return to the White House comes at a critical moment for America's energy future. We are experiencing unprecedented demand for reliable power to power fast-growing technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Its demand is expected to increase rapidly in the coming years. In President Biden's Washington, Democrats are on the brink of a failed attempt to galvanize his political base by pushing his unrealistic dreams of an electric grid powered entirely by unpredictable wind and solar power. It's leaning more and more to the left. Fortunately, Mr. Trump understands that our nation's energy security, technological superiority, and national security are at stake. We've already seen the new administration's emphasis on good energy policy with the announcement of a brand new National Energy Council.

The amount of energy used in AI data centers alone is expected to skyrocket over the next decade. Every time a new technology is announced or a breakthrough is made in quantum computing, the demand for energy increases accordingly. Other countries around the world, particularly China, are building the massive data centers and energy infrastructure needed to accelerate advances in AI. Meanwhile, the U.S. energy sector has been hobbled for four years by policy decisions that seek to limit and curtail energy production rather than maximize its potential.

Putting history behind us, President Trump's first term and record of supporting reliable nuclear power as a critical energy source provides reason for optimism about the new direction of U.S. energy policy. . Mr. Trump has a track record of success on nuclear power and demonstrating what is possible when you put America first.

Within the first six months of his first term, President Trump announced efforts to unleash the power of American innovation on industry. “First, we will begin to revive and expand the nuclear energy sector, which produces clean, renewable and emission-free energy. This is very pleasing to me,” he said.

In 2019, the Trump administration's Department of Energy (DOE) finalized a total of $12 billion in loan guarantees to finance construction of the Vogtle nuclear power plant in Georgia. This is the first nuclear power plant built in the United States in decades. This achievement is not just about creating jobs and expanding production capacity. It was a down payment on future innovation.

That same year, President Trump released a presidential memorandum establishing the U.S. Nuclear Fuel Task Force. It was significant to recognize the national security implications of the need for nuclear power generation. Ultimately, the administration proposed a uranium stockpile program to the DOE to ensure a secure energy future for America.

President Trump's forward-looking approach has also become an important countermeasure against China. Previous administrations ignored China's efforts to dominate both the global nuclear and AI markets. However, the Trump administration has taken concrete actions to limit nuclear exports to China and succeeded in persuading allies to buy nuclear technology from the United States rather than China.

Many Democrats in Washington have been forced to believe that their green agenda is the only way forward and refuse to accept other ideas, no matter how worthy they may be. I hope. Most Americans already understand the reality that powering AI and other future technologies with solar and wind power alone is an illusion. They are unreliable, uneconomical, and cannot provide the amount of power America needs. Thankfully, President Trump has already laid much of the groundwork to protect our existing nuclear capabilities and invest in our future. We now have a real opportunity to increase our nuclear power capacity, either through new power plants or by bringing back shuttered power plants that we desperately need. But we must ensure that the existing nuclear fleet, which has been closed multiple times over the past decade, is preserved. These two strategies provide the necessary additional power around the clock, supporting current infrastructure and driving innovation.

Energy policy does not exist in a vacuum. It is inextricably tied to America's technology future and global economic leadership. Protecting and expanding existing nuclear capacity means powering more AI, more quantum computing, and more innovation at home with power that operates 24 hours a day in all weather conditions. It means you can. Every advance in nuclear technology strengthens our national security and ensures that we do not cede our technological superiority to China or Russia.

While campaigning in Pennsylvania, Trump touted the benefits of nuclear energy and promised to embrace it as an energy source. “We will approve new energy infrastructure quickly and embrace all forms of energy, including nuclear. Nuclear is great energy,” he said. China is actively expanding its industrial and technological infrastructure. Don't let insufficient energy capacity hold you back. I am confident that the team President Trump has assembled, including North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum at the Interior Department and Liberty Energy CEO Chris Wright at the Department of Energy, understands this. I am doing it.
