Canada’s Invitation to Peace Commission Withdrawn by Trump
On Thursday, President Donald Trump rescinded Canada’s invitation to join the newly formed international group known as the Peace Commission.
Trump communicated this decision directly to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney through a post on Truth Social. In the message, he stated:
Dear Prime Minister Carney:
Please allow this letter to state that the Peace Committee may withdraw at any time your invitation to join Canada in the most prestigious leadership committee ever assembled.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Donald J. Trump
president of the united states
According to reports, Trump formally announced the establishment of the Peace Commission at the World Economic Forum (WEF) held in Davos, Switzerland. The group, which consists of around 35 member countries at present, is tasked with addressing international disputes.
During his speech, Trump highlighted the significance of the new group, calling it potentially “the most important board in history.”
As of now, over 50 countries, including Canada, have received invitations to be part of the initiative. Canada’s withdrawal of the invitation followed Carney’s criticism of the United States during his speech at the WEF on Tuesday.
Reports indicate that Carney is pursuing closer business relations with China’s government and had met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing prior to the WEF.
In his speech, Carney critiqued Trump directly, stating that “the great powers are starting to use economic integration as a weapon” while mentioning how “tariffs are being used as leverage.”
On Wednesday, Trump remarked at the WEF that Canada is benefitting from “a lot of freebies” from the United States, suggesting that Canada should be more appreciative.
He said, “Canada lives because of the United States. Mark, please remember that next time you speak.”
This statement seemed to provoke a strong reaction from Carney, who responded on social media, asserting that Canada does not “live because of America” and emphasized Canadian pride.
In light of these tensions, Trump promptly retracted Canada’s invitation to the Peace Commission.
According to the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, Prime Minister Carney and his cabinet are set to meet in Quebec City soon to discuss potential impacts of these escalating verbal exchanges on U.S.-Canada relations.
