Trump cancels plan to deploy federal troops in San Francisco

President Donald Trump has decided not to proceed with a planned influx of federal agents and troops into San Francisco this weekend.

On Thursday, Trump mentioned on Truth Social that local leaders had requested him to hold off on the operation, noting that Mayor Daniel Lurie is reportedly making notable progress. “I spoke to Mayor Lurie last night, and he kindly asked for an opportunity to address the issues,” he wrote.

Mayor Lurie confirmed that the surge had been called off.

He stated that Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem supported this decision during their morning call, as reported by FOX 2 San Francisco.

“We appreciate all the San Franciscans who have united in recent days,” Lurie expressed. “City leaders are aligned on public safety, demonstrating our shared values. This truly reflects the best of our city.”

Lurie mentioned that he is keeping an eye on developments and is ready for any scenario. Fox News Digital is seeking comments from the White House and the Department of Homeland Security.

Initially, there were reports that around 100 Customs and Border Protection agents would be acting on “pre-identified” targets, which might involve sites like hardware stores in the Bay Area.

On another note, around 200 to 300 demonstrators were spotted singing and chanting at the entrance of Coast Guard Island in Alameda early Thursday.

Trump had previously hinted at deploying federal agents and the National Guard to San Francisco for an immigration enforcement initiative akin to those in Los Angeles, Portland, and Chicago.

This initiative faced strong backlash from California officials, including Governor Gavin Newsom.

“Donald Trump, who has a conviction record himself and pardoned someone for assaulting a federal officer, is misleading the public by promoting the idea that America—or California—is lawless,” Newsom remarked on Tuesday. “California has proven him wrong in court and in reality.”

He also stated, “The notion that federal forces can invade cities without just cause, oversight, or respect for state sovereignty is a significant breach of the rule of law. We stand firm: California will protect our Constitution, our citizens, and our principles against the overreach of tyrants.”
