Lambeth Country Show Highlights Quirky Vegetable Sculptures

LONDON – This past Saturday, the Lambeth Country Show showcased some unusual vegetable sculptures that humorously depicted President Donald Trump, singer Dolly Parton, and even a corn-themed take on the Pope’s penchant for peculiar creations. This event is London’s version of the Urban Fair, an annual gathering held in Brockwell Park.

The two-day fair included a vegetable sculpture contest along with livestock shows, musical performances, and a range of other imaginative displays that caught the public’s attention.

This year, many sculptures drew references from recent events, particularly Pope elections. One standout piece was titled “Cornclave” and consisted of a cardinal made entirely from corn.

Other notable entries included “CowriParton,” drawing from the knee-shaped Irish rap trio and inspired by Liverpool’s vegetable-themed “Mo Salad” movie “9 To Chive.” There were even animated figures of Wallace and Gromit, crafted from butternut squash.

Trump was also represented as a butternut squash, reflecting local political themes in some of the submitted works.

In Lambeth, much like in various other areas of London, local authorities are organizing large events in parks, which has stirred some dissatisfaction among nearby residents, who are concerned about noise and disruption.

Mark Rylance, an actor known for his role in “Wolf Hall,” has been vocal against the increased festivities. With an apple-sculpted head and playful signs, he’s been labeled a “not in my backyard” protester, humorously dubbed “Mark Likerunch.”

The “Great Wall of Broccoli” was another interesting exhibit featured in the competition, further emphasizing the show’s creativity.

“Every year, we look forward to the vegetable sculptures,” remarked fair-goer Madirukson. “They’re so original and resourceful, and we adore the political commentary.”

“And the puns,” chimed in Marek Sandrowski, who accompanied her. “Vegetable puns are definitely a highlight.”
